Stress Test Q & A

What is a stress test?

A stress test is a test that measures your heart activity while you're exercising on a treadmill. The Marion Physician Associates team performs stress tests as part of the diagnostic process when you're dealing with heart or other health issues.

Diagnosis

If you're suffering from symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath, a stress test can help your provider find the underlying cause. After analyzing your stress test, your care provider can diagnose conditions like coronary artery disease and heart arrhythmias.

Measuring capability

A stress test can show how much exercise you can do without endangering heart function, so it can help your care provider design your treatment and recovery plan.

How should I prepare for my stress test?

A Marion Physician Associates team member gives you specific instructions shortly before your scheduled stress test. Usually, this includes:

Medication

In some cases, your care provider may have you discontinue certain medications before your stress test. Usually, you can resume taking the medication immediately afterward.

If you use any kind of medical devices, including asthma inhalers, bring them to your stress test in case you need them.

When do I need a stress test?

You might need a stress test for many reasons.

Treatment monitoring

If you already suffer from a heart problem, a stress test can reveal how effective that treatment is, and whether you need to make changes.

Risk assessment

A stress test can help your care provider determine your risk level for heart attack or stroke.

Stress tests are simple and noninvasive and can yield a lot of valuable information.

Clothes, Shoes, Skin

Wear comfortable, lightweight clothes that are easy to move in. You might grow warm during your stress test, so layers are a good idea.

Wear sturdy sneakers or other shoes that are easy to walk in. Avoid anything with a big heel.

Your care provider attaches electrodes to your skin to monitor your heart during the test. Don’t wear lotions or perfumes that could keep the electrodes from adhering properly.

Food and drink

Your care provider may ask you to fast before your test, so follow those instructions fully to get the most accurate stress test results.
