Venous Scans Q & A

What is a venous scan?

A venous scan is an ultrasound test in which the Marion Physician Associates team checks your veins for blockages. Untreated, blockages can lead to stroke or heart attack. A venous scan can identify the problem early so you can get the treatment you need.

An upper venous scan checks the veins in your neck, arms, shoulders, and wrists, while a lower venous scan checks the leg and ankle veins.

When do I need a venous scan?

Your Marion Physician Associates care provider might perform a venous scan in a few different situations. If your provider suspects a condition like deep vein thrombosis, a venous scan is often the first step in the diagnosis. You might also need a venous scan if you've had a previous heart attack or stroke or if you're at risk for these conditions.

What if my venous scan shows a blood clot?

If your venous scan shows a blood clot, don’t worry: The cardiology specialists at Marion Physician Associates can analyze your scan and perform other necessary tests to determine the best treatment for you.

In most cases, you need angioplasty or bypass surgery when you have a blood clot blocking an artery. There’s also a noninvasive option called external counterpulsation (ECP) therapy that might help improve blood flow if you’re not a candidate for surgery. Your care provider recommends the best solution for your long-term wellness.

Book your appointment online or by calling the Marion Physician Associates, P.A. office nearest you today.

What are the symptoms of deep vein thrombosis?

The symptoms of deep vein thrombosis, in which you have a blood clot in your arm or leg, typically include:

Leg swelling
Leg cramps, especially in your calves
Warm skin
Red skin

If you're dealing with these symptoms, talk to your Marion Physician Associates care provider as soon as possible. A venous scan and/or other diagnostic tests can determine why you're suffering.

What does a venous scan feel like?

A venous scan is a painless test. Your Marion Physician Associates care provider applies a conductive gel to the test area before moving a transducer gently atop your skin to capture internal images of your veins. These images show whether your veins are narrowed or blocked.
